Hi! I’m Kelly,
I write books inspired by archaeology, history and folklore for children and young adults
I grew up in Sheffield on the doorstep of the Peak District, where the wild moors and ancient remains of past societies gave me my love of nature and archaeology. These days I live in London, where I work as a curator of archaeology collections, and where I’m still able to enjoy nature through my local woods and parks.
After doing quite poorly at school, I was fortunate enough to be given the chance to study archaeology at the University of Sheffield, where I regained my love of learning and went on to earn two degrees and a doctorate. This led to a career as a professional archaeologist, which involved digging at various sites across the country, before moving into museum curatorial work.
I’ve always been an avid reader, but I didn’t start writing until I turned thirty, when I finally found the confidence to make a start – and I haven’t stopped since! Check out my blog for more on my writer journey.
I adore a good fantasy story, with my favourites being The Lord of the Rings, His Dark Materials, Wolf Brother, and just about anything written by Terry Pratchett. I love nothing more than re-reading my old childhood favourites – The Secret Garden, the Runaways, Tuck Everlasting – to name a few. I’ve also discovered lots of fantastic new children’s books on my writing journey, with Sophie Kirtley, Anne-Marie Conway and Skye McKenna now among my favourite authors.
As well as being inspired by other books, I draw huge inspiration from video games, especially the Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls series. When I’m not out for a walk, working or writing, you’ll probably find me gaming!
